Research Notes
Fremantle Cemetery was
established in 1899. It covers 46 hectares (110 acres). It is
the third public cemetery in Fremantle. The first was in Alma Street, which
closed in 1855 and is now a primary school. The second, at Skinner Street,
started in 1852 and was operating until 1899, when this cemetery opened.
Burials were transferred by families from earlier cemeteries. In 1930 ninety gravestones
were moved from Skinner Street to Fremantle. The Skinner Street cemetery is now
the location of the Oval belonging to the John Curtin College of the Arts,
where it is estimated 200 bodies remain. Approx. 40,000 burials have taken
place at Fremantle cemetery. For its first sixty years the cemetery was
dedicated to burials but in 1959 a crematorium was opened here which allowed an
alternative to those who preferred it. Over 66,000 cremations have taken place
here.
Fremantle cemetery has several different entrances: Carrington
Street, Leach Highway and Sainsbury Road. The office is located just inside the
Carrington Entrance. Overall Fremantle Cemetery Map

Record Access
The MCB website allows you to do a historical deceased search under the “name search” heading on the home page.
Once you have identified that the person is buried /
cremated at Fremantle Cemetery. You click on the surname of the correct
individual to get further information i.e. exact date of death and burial
information - Anglican Section Monumental AA Grave Number 225
This search engine does have its limitations. It does not
identify others buried in the same plot. You need to look up every individual
to identify this level of detail.
